“My name is Andrew and I am 44 years old. I have been working in the transport industry for most of my life. Being brought up between a transport yard with my dad and a car sales garage with my mum, I have always had a passion for all kinds of transport.
My dad was the transport manager of a general haulage firm, and this gave me the insight into the industry. They did all aspects of general haulage, from boxes to pallets to live stock. Long hours and great rewards made the transport and haulage industry very tempting for a young boy like me. So, even before I could “legally” drive, I was driving all kinds of stuff round the yard - trucks, vans, diggers, cars, and fork lifts.
My mum worked in a performance car garage which is where my love of fast cars comes from. I spent many hours in the dealership, including the workshop, cleaning bay, and the showroom. I was treated to rides in all the top performance cars. Something most boys of my age could only dream of doing. It was a lot of fun. Both of my parents worked hard to provide for me. I never wanted for anything and I think that's where I get my work ethic from.
As soon as I got my driving licence, I got my first driving job doing multi-drop deliveries in a small van, which I soon excelled in. Then I moved up to driving 7.5 tonne vehicles after a few years, again, excelling in my field. After that I turned my hand to being a fitter, and within two years I was promoted to an assistant depot manager. I then decided I wanted to go back to driving, and I applied to do my HGV. After passing that, with one or two small hiccups, I signed on with a few agencies, where I got a vast amount of experience: multi drop, Hiab, skip hire, roll-on, roll-off, containers, fridges, flatbeds, and taut liners. Then I found my passion for low loaders and I haven't looked back since.
Mark at H. E. Services in Membury took me under his wing and trained me on all aspects of the plant. This included loading and unloading the low loader. Since then, I've worked for some of the biggest plant hire and plant haulage companies in the country, covering the length and breadth of the UK.”
